Edward Scissorhands review

Edward scissorhands review

Edward scissorhands was directed by Tim Burton who has made lots of film many of the same style of Edward scissor hands. His style is very much creepy sort of weird films and this is exactly what this film is! The genre of Edward scissor hands is horror/romance/fantasy.

It all starts with a grandma telling a story to her little grand daughter. It begins in the dark lonely castle on the hill…
Peg bog is one of the main characters played by Dianne Wiest. She is a rather pushy lady who works as an Avon representative selling their products in the town below the castle. Nobody is willing to buy or even try any make-up so she ventures up in to the dark fortress to see if anyone there is. She creaked through the gates and gazes in wonderment at the beautiful topiary. The hedges and bushes were perfectly sculptured in weird and crazy shapes. As she enter she is met by the weirdest looking machinery, then up stairs she find a very scared unsure man and from then on she sort of takes him under her wing and looks after him. She takes him home and he lives with her and her family. And for a while it all works and he becomes very popular, but then he becomes an enemy and the whole town turns against him, but the question is will the bogs still support him?

This film is set in America in very colourful town in the 1950s, over looked by a dark castle owned by a mad scientist. The town its self is very modern (for the time) and is very formulaic as the houses were practically identical with all of them set in incredibly uniformed rows along the street. The village is almost unreal it is so colourful and it very much like the rough edges had been rounded, I feel that this is a perfect place to set the film because it is rather creepy and unrealistic.

The main characters are;
Peg- is the mother who finds Edward, she is rather pushy and sympathetic. She works as a Avon representative selling their makeup products. She has sort of gingery hair in a bob and wears like most people in the town really brightly coloured clothing. She is played by Dianne Wiest and is a very inquisitive lady. I feel that she is not the most realistic of character but is defiantly a strong one.
Edward – Edward is one of the creepiest charters ever and is play fantastically by the famous Jonny Depp. He is a lonely, scared and unsure person who was brought down from the castle by Peg. He wears a black leather suit covered in buckles which he wears constantly under a prober suit of the dads or by its self. Of course he is not real, he is fantasy but he is played well so you can defiantly see why he does what he does. He is quite miss understood as his personality is much more different than what it looks.
Kim- Kim is the daughter and is played by Winona Ryder, she is very pretty with long gingery, blondy sort of hair. She very innocent and is very stereo typically a heroine. She wears clothes of the time normally quite girly clothes.
Jim-he is the bad boy friend of Kim’s who gets Edward in to a lot of trouble. He looks and acts like normal boy until the end when it all goes wrong. He is played (very well) by Anthony Michael Hall.

The films sort of idea or themes are that you should except people for who they are and not judge people by what they look like e.g. Edward looks very dark and scary with his horrible scars and crazy hair were as in actual fact he is a very kind, considerate person. Also some people don’t fit in in some situations as you find out in the end of the film. The film makes you feel really sorry for Edward and really annoyed with the people because thing can not just except him for who he is.

The techniques that the film maker has used is he has uses settings and lighting to create a really creepy effect and also to contrast the dark lonely castle on the hill to the bright, busy town beneath it. The director did this so you could see how bigger difference and change it was for Edward and so you could feel what he was feeling.

The director made this film for I think and age range from 10 to 15 because it is quite disturbing and covers quite important messages and thoughts and has a rather gripping story line.

I enjoyed this film because the acting and scenery was very realistic and really made you feel for the character and under stand what is happening. I did not enjoy it completely because it is a bit to weird and freaky for me not because it is violent or disgusting but because the character are quite creepy jet really real so it disturbed me a bit. I still advise you to watch it because it is very well made and acted but not to be watched alone.
